Richard White: 2014 Calendar

Photographer Richard White’s High Country Calendar, now in its 15th edition, is created, designed and manufactured right here.

The printer, Adams Print, has won Printing Industry Craftsman awards for the past four editions and is nominated for the 2014 calendar.

White’s lustrous black-and-white photographs are taken in the Victorian and New South Wales mountain country, using a 4 x 5 film camera, mostly using Kodak Tri-X film. He prints the photos to exhibition standard and has them scanned for reproduction.

Why does he use this two-step method when he could directly scan his negatives? After years of experience in the darkroom, he says he is much more confident processing his images using the traditional light-sensitive materials than working digitally in Photoshop.

The calendar pictures evoke an interesting response. We admire their beauty, but are also inclined to say: “I’ll never get there. It’s too difficult.”
