Review by Robert Nelson
More than 40 years ago, John Gollings systematically photographed Surfers Paradise. Even back then, the strip city wasn’t a sleepy hollow but already set on its course, rapidly growing with one eye on the beach and the other on the highway.
Gollings had every reason to begin his documentary project. Aside from personal and artistic reasons – because spectacle abounded in serial form – Gollings was aware of what would become a powerfully influential book by the Americans Denise Scott Brown and Robert Venturi, Learning from Las Vegas of 1972.
