Film: Finding Vivian Maier

Nova Cinema. Carlton

Vivian Maier was a mystery even to those who knew her. A secretive nanny in the wealthy suburbs of Chicago, her life was one that never attracted attention. Until amatuer historian John Maloof accidentally uncovered thousands of negatives at a storage locker auction before changing history. Today Vivian Maier is hailed as one of the greatest 20th-century photographers, along with Diane Arbus Robert Frank, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Weegee.

As filmmakers unearth Vivian’s story, combing through thousands of negatives and a mountain of other material left behind in storage lockers, they track down an odd collection of past employers, children she cared for, store owners, movie theater operators and curious neighbors who create a portrait of a mysterious, driven artist.
