The 138S is a really practical enlarger, in my case for black and white photography. It was built for 5x7 negs but the additional condensers and masks allow for most sizes of 120 and 35mm film. The weak point I discovered when it came to me by air from a university in America - the steel wire of the main counterbalance spring had fractured. but I sourced better steel cable and a local engineer completed the job. A second cable is used in the counterbalance of the imaging board, which goes right down to about 30cm from the floor. The engineering is sublime.

If the one for sale has the right masks for your negatives and the right condensers, it is a nip at this price. The original light bulbs are no longer available, but a large opal globe with a high output can be centered easily. Good luck!

I have had the pleasure and honour of meeting Mr. Rusis and his delightful ladyfriend Zigi Georges.
I felt a little nervous at first, being in the presence of such a great photographic mind but was put at ease rapidly.
I left feeling inspired, rather than over-awed. Maris and Zigis' enthusiasm is infective and their hospitality genuine.
I have started large format (5×4) and let me assure everyone - it is technically demanding and frustratingly complicated. Kudos to Maris for making it look so fluent and skillful. I'll never be as good a photographer as Maris or Zigi but I've now something to aim towards.

Hi Len,

This is an awesome image.
Its not often that a B&W shot of the Blue Mtns canyons works as well as this one.

Great story too - enjoyed reading about how it came together.

Cheers,
Vic.

Could you please explain necessary of Photo-Flow? What for? I use Foma liquid emulsion too but not on the glass plates. But I really want to try it.

Thank you!

I notice Quillam heavily uses photoshop to 'enhance' his images. Ironically, this makes them look ten times worse! Too sharp, over saturated, and with many instances of distortion. A photographer, he makes not.
